McLaren Construction Partners with FieldAI to Deploy Autonomous Quadruped Robots Across UK Construction Sites

McLaren Construction has partnered with California-based FieldAI to deploy autonomous quadruped robots across its UK construction sites for 360-degree site scanning, point cloud data capture, progress verification, and AI-enabled deviation analysis comparing site conditions against design models.

McLaren Construction has partnered with FieldAI, a California-based robotics company, to deploy autonomous quadruped robots across its UK construction sites. The initiative marks FieldAI’s entry into the UK market, extending a presence the company has already built across hundreds of sites in Europe, Asia, and North America.

The robots will initially be deployed for 360-degree site imagery capture, point cloud data generation, progress verification, model-to-site deviation analysis, safety compliance patrols, and quality assurance. Regular automated scans will create a continuous visual and spatial record of work as it is installed, enabling AI-enabled comparison of actual site conditions against design models.

What the Technology Does

The core operational value of the deployment is speed of deviation detection. In conventional construction quality assurance, discrepancies between installed work and design intent are often identified through periodic manual inspections, creating a lag between when an error is introduced and when it is found. Autonomous robots scanning sites on a regular automated schedule compress that lag, potentially allowing issues to be identified while the relevant work is still accessible and correctable rather than after it has been built over.

AI-enabled deviation analysis compares the spatial data captured by the robots against the building information model, flagging discrepancies for human review. The spatial record also serves as a timestamped audit trail of site progress – a documentation asset that has value for contract management, handover, and dispute resolution as well as real-time quality control.

The quadruped platform is designed to navigate the obstacles that construction sites present – stairs, doors, uneven surfaces, and partially completed structures – that wheeled inspection robots cannot traverse. “The significance of this deployment for the construction industry is that we now have autonomous robots navigating stairs, doors and other obstacles and constantly working with our human teams to support productivity, safety and quality,” said Adam Nicholson, Group Pre-construction Director at McLaren Construction.

Its entry into the UK through a partnership with a major contractor rather than direct market development reflects a common route for construction technology companies seeking rapid deployment scale – established contractors provide immediate access to active sites, procurement relationships, and operational context that would take years to develop independently.

The McLaren partnership adds UK construction to a use pattern visible across multiple sectors: autonomous quadruped robots taking over the routine, time-consuming inspection and documentation work that human site teams currently perform manually, freeing those teams for judgment-intensive tasks while generating more frequent and more spatially precise data than manual processes can produce.
