Amazon has announced that its Prime Air drone delivery service will expand to nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of 2026, a sixfold increase from its current footprint. The expansion will bring 30-minute drone delivery to communities with tens of millions of customers, with Prime Air operating from sites that each serve an area of approximately 175 square miles. Prime Air currently operates from 11 sites across seven states: Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas. Near-term launches are planned for the Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise metro areas, with additional communities following through the remainder of the year.
What Prime Air Delivers
Prime Air offers millions of items delivered in as fast as 30 minutes, with most orders arriving within 60 minutes of checkout. Items must weigh 5 pounds or less and fit within a large shoebox – a specification that covers more than 60% of Amazon’s most frequently purchased products. Eligible categories include groceries, electronics, cosmetics, medications, and household products. Prime members receive free drone delivery on orders of $50 or more; orders under $50 carry a $2.99 fee for Prime members and $4.99 for non-members.
The service is integrated into Amazon’s existing shopping app with the same checkout process, customer service, and A-to-z Guarantee that covers standard deliveries.
Safety and Regulatory Framework
Prime Air holds FAA Part 135 air carrier certification – the same framework used for commercial air carriers and the highest level of FAA oversight for drone delivery operations, which Amazon joined as one of only eight operators to have completed the certification process. The drones operate with a Detect-and-Avoid system that continuously monitors surrounding airspace and makes real-time navigation decisions autonomously. Onboard cameras and sensors handle navigation and obstacle detection but do not record individuals or transmit live feeds to human monitors.
The drones are fully electric with zero exhaust emissions, engineered to operate in light rain across a range of temperatures. During drop-off, sound levels are below that of an idling delivery truck and last approximately 30 seconds.
Strategic Position in Amazon’s Delivery Network
Prime Air sits at the fastest end of Amazon’s tiered delivery architecture, complementing Amazon Now – 30-minute delivery from specialized urban micro-fulfillment locations – and the broader Same-Day and 1-hour delivery network covering more than 10,000 U.S. cities. The drone service is positioned for suburban areas where the combination of available airspace and residential density makes autonomous aerial delivery operationally practical.
The 500-city target, if achieved, would establish Prime Air as the largest commercial drone delivery network in the United States by coverage, well ahead of Wing, Zipline, and DoorDash Air, which received FAA Part 135 certification in July. The scale also provides the operational data volume that will be necessary to further improve the autonomous systems underlying Prime Air’s Detect-and-Avoid capability and route optimization.
