South Korean logistics operator CJ Logistics has deployed two humanoid dual-arm robots at an Olive Young distribution center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, marking what the company describes as the first application of humanoid robots in Korean logistics operations. The robots are handling the task of inserting cushioning material into boxes on the packaging line. The deployment follows successful field demonstrations at the company’s Gunpo fulfillment center last year and represents a transition from pilot testing into live operational use. The move is being positioned as an early indicator that physical AI is beginning to move from laboratory and pilot settings into commercial workflows in the sector.

CJ Logistics frames humanoid platforms as complementary to conventional fixed logistics automation rather than a direct replacement. Distribution centers handle highly variable products and orders, which limits the effectiveness of purpose-built equipment for many tasks. Dual-arm humanoids offer the advantage of being deployable across multiple processes while operating within existing warehouse layouts and workflows, without requiring significant physical reconfiguration. The company plans to feed operational data from the current deployment back into AI training to improve accuracy and responsiveness across a broader range of situations, and to progressively expand from packaging into picking, sorting, and inspection. The long-term goal is a general-purpose logistics humanoid capable of executing multiple logistics processes sequentially.

Central to the strategy is the company’s Robot Foundation Model, positioned as the robot’s brain. The RFM is intended to enable robots to perceive surroundings through vision and sensors, then determine and execute context-appropriate actions. CJ Logistics is developing the platform through a set of external collaborations, working with Robotis on hardware, Aidin Robotics on robot hands, and Realworld AI on RFM development. Kim Jung-hee, head of the company’s TES Logistics Technology Research Institute, said the plan is to combine field logistics data with AI to build humanoids that can autonomously judge and perform tasks, ultimately supporting a fulfillment environment in which humans and robots work together.

The CJ Logistics deployment is part of a broader wave of humanoid activity in Korean industry, alongside recent moves including the NC AI and LG Electronics consortium on on-device AI humanoid technology, Hyundai’s ongoing labor dispute over Atlas deployment plans, and continued expansion by Doosan Robotics. Logistics remains one of the more commercially advanced application areas for humanoid robotics globally, with Agility Robotics’ Digit units operating at GXO, Amazon, and Mercado Libre facilities. CJ Logistics’ rollout is notable because it moves humanoids into a market that has established robotic and automation infrastructure but has not previously used humanoid form factors in live operations. Whether the deployment scales beyond packaging into more complex logistics tasks will depend on the reliability and iteration speed of the RFM and the durability of the underlying hardware in continuous operational environments.
