iRobot has launched the Roomba Max 875 Combo Robot, its most capable home cleaning platform to date, priced at $1,199 with an AutoWash Dock. The robot introduces three proprietary technologies that address specific consumer complaints with existing robot vacuums and mops: SealForce for deeper carpet cleaning, ThermaMist for dried-on stain removal, and DriLift for automatic mop lifting on carpet. The company simultaneously launched the Roomba Plus 678 Combo Robot at $899, featuring active SealForce and a two-step SprayForce AI mopping system. Both are available now on iRobot.com and in North American retail later this month.
The launch represents iRobot’s most significant product announcement since emerging from bankruptcy restructuring under new owner Shenzhen Picea Robotics and launching the Roomba Electro Plus earlier this year.
SealForce: A Mechanical Rethinking of Carpet Vacuuming
The Max 875’s central technical advance is SealForce, a system in which the robot chassis mechanically lowers a skirt that forms a tight seal against carpet fibers during vacuuming. Rather than allowing airflow to escape around the edges of the robot – which reduces effective suction on carpet – SealForce concentrates the 20 liters-per-second airflow and 35,000 Pa suction precisely against the carpet pile where debris is trapped. iRobot claims the result is 3x deeper carpet cleaning compared to vacuuming without the seal.
“We’re able to seal the chassis against the carpet fibers, so the airflow has somewhere to go instead of escaping around the edges,” said Adam Pope, Vice President and Chief Engineer at iRobot. “More suction helps, but the seal is what takes it to a level beyond what’s previously been possible.”
ThermaMist and PowerSpin Max: Heated Mopping
On the mopping side, ThermaMist technology sprays heated ultrasonic mist continuously ahead of the mop roller, softening dried-on spills before the roller contacts the floor. The PowerSpin Max roller mop – described as the industry’s largest, 44% bigger than the standard roller – scrubs with heated water at 300 RPM and 18 Newtons of downward pressure. iRobot claims 2x better stain removal versus mopping without ThermaMist and 3.75x deeper scrubbing than the Roomba Max 775.
DriLift: Automatic Carpet Protection
The third key technology is DriLift, an AI-powered system that automatically detects carpet, raises the roller mop, and lowers a protective shield to keep rugs dry while vacuuming continues. The system eliminates the need to manually remove the mop pad before the robot crosses from hard floor to carpet – a friction point that has led many users of combination vacuum-mop robots to run separate cleaning cycles.
The AutoWash Dock
The accompanying AutoWash Dock handles eight maintenance functions autonomously: washing the roller with 176-degree Fahrenheit hot water, drying with 131-degree heated air, auto-dispensing StayClean mopping concentrate, and self-emptying debris into a carbon AllergenLock bag lasting up to 90 days. Navigation uses ClearView Pro Dual-Line LiDAR alongside PrecisionVision AI, which recognizes and avoids more than 300 common household objects.
The Plus 678 at $899 includes active SealForce with 30,000 Pa suction, SprayForce AI pre-treatment delivering a 40,000 Pa high-pressure spray burst before mopping, a self-cleaning PowerSpin roller at 15 Newtons, and the same AutoWash Dock with hot water washing and heated air drying.
