Lupin Dental, the French dental robotics company operating as Digicuto SAS, has closed a €15 million Series A financing round led by Fynveur, a private equity firm advised by Invus, which made a direct investment of €10 million. Existing shareholders, new private investors, and a loan from Bpifrance completed the round. Invus has taken a board seat alongside the investment.
The Montpellier-based company, founded in 2019 by award-winning cosmetic dentists Galip Gürel and Stefen Koubi, has developed a robotic system that automates tooth preparation for dental veneers – one of the most precision-critical stages in cosmetic dentistry. The system is approved for clinical use in the UK and India, where it is licensed and sold by Dolphin Lifesciences LLC as the Dolphin Robotic Dental System. U.S. and EU regulatory clearance has not yet been obtained.
How the System Works
The Lupin Robotic System automates the preparation of teeth for veneers under active dentist supervision. The clinical workflow begins with the software generating the patient’s desired smile and producing a corresponding treatment plan. The robot then executes the physical tooth preparation – controlling how much enamel is removed and where – to the tolerances the plan specifies, while the dentist monitors and remains in control throughout.
The core value proposition is the transfer of expertise. Gürel and Koubi spent three decades developing the manual precision that elite cosmetic veneer preparation requires. The system encodes that expertise into software, allowing a general dentist without equivalent specialist experience to achieve comparable preparation accuracy. “A robot cannot replace their expertise, but it can replicate that expertise for dentists who haven’t had the opportunity to develop such skills over many years,” the founders have told investors.
The Regulatory Race
In dental robotics, regulatory approval is the primary competitive differentiator rather than technology alone. The UK and India approvals place Lupin ahead of most competitors in those markets, but outside the U.S. and EU – the world’s two largest dental markets – where Neocis’ Yomi robot is already cleared for guided implant surgery and Boston-based Perceptive has raised $30 million for a fully automated crown placement system.
Pearl raised $58 million in its Series B for dental AI diagnostics. The overall dental robotics and AI market is forecast to grow from approximately $600-712 million in 2025 to $1.4-2.6 billion by 2033-2034 at annual growth rates of 13-18%.
How the Capital Will Be Used
Lupin plans to use the Series A proceeds to establish partnerships with universities, medical centers, dental professionals, and dental service organizations to expand access to its robotic system while it pursues U.S. and EU regulatory approval. Bpifrance’s involvement follows the French development bank’s established pattern of backing French deep-tech companies in sectors including quantum computing, AI, climate technology, and healthcare.
