Key Notes
- Unitree reported third-quarter revenue of 665 million yuan, up 69.93%, while net profit attributable to shareholders fell 17.37% to 112.7 million yuan.
- Quarterly R&D spending increased 249.58% to 127 million yuan, reflecting greater investment in embodied AI models, computing and the research team.
- Nine-month net profit rose 270.54%, helped by a prior-year share-based payment expense, while profit excluding non-recurring items declined 18.78%.
Unitree reported a 17.4% decline in third-quarter net profit despite revenue growth of about 70%, putting the cost of developing more capable robots at the center of its first earnings release since its August listing.
The Chinese robot maker generated 665 million yuan in quarterly revenue and 112.7 million yuan in net profit attributable to shareholders, according to Reuters reporting on October 28. The company remained profitable even as earnings declined from a year earlier.
Research Spending Outpaces Sales Growth
Unitree’s quarterly report, signed October 28, lists R&D investment of 127 million yuan for July–September, up 249.58%. That amounted to 19.1% of revenue.
The company attributed the increase to embodied-intelligence development, including large models and computing, an expanded research team and new products. These are investments in the software and engineering needed to turn physical capability into a wider range of useful work.
Reuters reported that quarterly profit fell short of a 224 million yuan analyst forecast. The gap highlights how quickly research spending can affect earnings even when sales continue to expand.
Why Nine-Month Profit Looks Much Stronger
The January–September figures point in a different direction: revenue reached about 1.82 billion yuan, up 55.71%, while reported net profit rose 270.54% to 386.7 million yuan.
Unitree said higher gross profit and a large one-time share-based payment expense in the prior-year period helped explain that profit increase. The year-earlier comparison therefore matters when interpreting the headline growth rate.
Profit excluding non-recurring items declined 18.78% over the nine months to roughly 349 million yuan. The figures show why the strong year-to-date headline should be read alongside the weaker quarterly and adjusted results.
Results Follow a Sharp Share-Price Rally
The earnings release comes after growing investor interest in AI models that could expand robot capabilities. RobotsBeat covered Unitree’s October 23 rally, when shares rose 20% on expectations about the software behind its machines.
The financial report provides a different kind of evidence from a demonstration. Revenue measures sales across a reporting period, while profit reflects the costs carried during that period. Neither figure alone establishes how well a particular humanoid performs in a customer’s workflow.
That distinction also applies to founder Wang Xingxing’s breakthrough forecast. The forecast concerns future technical progress; the earnings report shows the resources being committed while the company works toward that ambition.
The Next Test Is Returns on Development
For a robotics company, a larger research budget can support new skills, better control and additional products. Its commercial value depends on whether those improvements generate repeat demand and can be supported economically after installation.
Unitree’s results do not show a business without revenue or profit. They show rapid sales expansion accompanied by a much faster rise in quarterly development spending. Subsequent reports will help establish whether that investment produces stronger earnings as well as more capable machines.
