China’s People’s Liberation Army has moved beyond public demonstrations of humanoid robots performing acrobatics and dance routines toward active military procurement, battlefield scenario research, and the development of training data systems designed to make humanoid robots militarily useful. A Reuters review of more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, academic studies, patents, government records, and defense industry materials documents a systematic progression from university research into practical military experimentation.
No armed humanoid robots are currently deployed with operational PLA units. The machines remain energy-intensive, mechanically unreliable outside controlled environments, and unprepared for the unpredictability of real combat conditions. The significance of the documented activity is not that robot soldiers are ready for war – they are not – but that China is building the infrastructure, research capability, and procurement pipeline to make humanoid robots militarily relevant within the timeframe researchers estimate.
The Military Application Research
Chinese military interest in humanoid robots accelerated in 2024 with forums at the National University of Defense Technology and the Academy of Military Sciences examining military applications. By 2025, the concept had moved into practical exercises. An NUDT competition simulated robot infiltration behind enemy lines, requiring systems to enter an area, map it, and locate targets. Other scenarios covered identity checks, security patrols, and base inspections.
A 2025 NUDT study described a hypothetical urban assault force using six robots including humanoids, robot dogs, and unmanned vehicles operating alongside troops to clear buildings floor by floor. The researchers projected that such systems could become available within five to ten years. Norinco’s Fuxi
Defense industry involvement has extended the program beyond military universities. Norinco, the state-owned defense conglomerate, has developed the Fuxi humanoid robot. Company materials describe it as capable of sentry duty, all-weather reconnaissance, intelligent patrol, and dangerous mission execution. Fuxi can also be operated through Norinco’s teleoperation system, which addresses one of humanoid robots’ current fundamental limitations: their inability to make reliable autonomous decisions in complex, unstructured environments by keeping humans in the decision chain for critical actions.
The Ethical and Legal Dimension
The move toward military humanoids raises questions about human control over the use of force that apply independently of how far the technology has advanced. Even teleoperated systems must eventually operate in environments containing civilians, wounded combatants, and individuals attempting to surrender – situations that international humanitarian law requires forces to distinguish between. The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that autonomous weapons face particular difficulty recognizing surrender, since such judgments depend on context, conduct, and intent that rule-based systems struggle to interpret reliably.
China’s defense ministry stated in March that AI-powered weapons should remain under human control. The U.S. military requires autonomous weapons to undergo legal review and realistic testing, with commanders and operators expected to exercise judgment over the use of force.
China Is Not Alone
The U.S. Army launched a competition last year to develop militarized humanoid capabilities for reconnaissance, security, obstacle clearing, hazardous materials handling, and urban warfare operations. Malcolm Davis of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute assessed that humanoid robots are not currently practical battlefield systems but could potentially become so within five to ten years – a timeline consistent with the Chinese military researchers’ own assessments.
China’s industrial advantage in the near term is substantial. Chinese manufacturers accounted for approximately 95% of global humanoid robot shipments in 2025, giving the PLA access to a domestic industry scaling faster than any comparable capability outside China.
