Key Notes
- Agility selected NVIDIA IGX Thor as Digit 5’s common onboard compute platform for its general-availability version.
- Early access is expected in the first half of 2027, with broader availability increasing over the following six to nine months.
- Agility is integrating Halos components and pursuing safety evaluation ahead of third-party certification, while protective decisions remain onboard.
Agility Robotics will standardize Digit 5’s onboard computing on NVIDIA IGX Thor as it prepares the humanoid for wider commercial deployment. The October 22 announcement makes NVIDIA the exclusive onboard compute provider for the general-availability version of the robot.
Agility’s announcement sets early access for the first half of 2027, with availability expected to grow over the following six to nine months. The intended customers include manufacturing, warehouse and distribution operators.
A Common Computing Platform for Digit 5
The transition brings Digit’s onboard systems onto a common architecture. Agility is also integrating IGX Thor and additional NVIDIA Halos models into its proprietary human-detection system, extending its work on perception and safety.
For a deployed robot, computing architecture affects how sensor information, action planning and protective functions work together. A consistent platform can give engineers a common basis for testing software and diagnosing faults across a fleet. The commercial benefit still depends on how well the complete machine performs in a customer’s workflow.
Safety Decisions Stay on the Robot
Agility co-founder and Chief Robot Officer Jonathan Hurst provided more detail in a separate engineering Q&A. He said a lost network connection would not remove Digit 5’s ability to perform its immediate task or disable its safety functions.
Hurst described an isolated safety computer operating separately from the main control computer. That system applies defined rules and can shut the robot down when a rule is violated. He said the islanded architecture would be integrated into IGX Thor and the Halos framework in a smaller physical footprint.
The explanation separates fleet coordination from immediate protective action. Agility’s Arc cloud software handles orchestration and workflow integration; the robot’s safety response remains local, according to Hurst. That distinction matters in facilities where a connection can drop while a machine is still moving.
Evaluation Ahead of Third-Party Certification
Agility will participate in NVIDIA’s Halos AI Systems Inspection Lab to evaluate safety-related software, AI components and cybersecurity protections ahead of final third-party certification. Participation describes an evaluation process; the announcement does not establish that Digit 5 has completed certification.
RobotsBeat’s Halos coverage examined the wider effort to build safety evidence for physical AI. For an operator, relevant evidence must connect the robot’s protective behavior to the tasks and working conditions at the deployment site.
Another Step Toward the 2027 Rollout
The compute decision follows other work on Digit 5’s operating requirements. RobotsBeat previously covered Agility’s Nyobolt battery partnership and the planned AGCO factory pilot. Power, computing, workflow integration and safety each affect how much useful work a humanoid can deliver.
The next milestones will be early-access deployments, certification outcomes and operating results from customer sites. Standardizing compute gives Agility a defined hardware foundation as it works toward those steps.
