Silicon Valley investors are touring China’s robot factories to assess competition facing their US portfolio companies, Business Insider reported. The visits include investors from Eclipse and G2 Venture Partners, with manufacturing and training data among their priorities.
G2 investor Neel Mehta described a facility where hundreds of workers teleoperated robots to collect training data. The report also highlighted organized factory tours costing about $10,000 per person, illustrating growing demand for access to China’s robotics ecosystem.
The supply-chain advantage extends beyond assembly. An April MERICS report estimated that China controls 63% of key companies supplying humanoid-robot components. Its electric-vehicle industry provides overlapping expertise in batteries and sensors, although high-end components and AI software still depend heavily on foreign suppliers.
Manufacturing strength does not establish general-purpose autonomy. MERICS found that Chinese humanoids still struggle with precise manipulation and multi-step coordination, with deployments largely confined to limited tasks and trials. It also cautioned that impressive demonstrations can rely on preprogrammed movements or human operators rather than real-time autonomous decisions.
That distinction echoes RobotsBeat’s coverage of humanoid demand, where research and training programs accounted for much of the early market. For investors, factory scale and data collection are useful signals; reliable performance, customer adoption and a defensible advantage remain separate questions when evaluating robotics businesses.
