XPENG Chairman He Xiaopeng has predicted that 2027 will mark the dawn of commercialized mass production for high-end humanoid robots, describing physical AI as the key platform for a transformation of the workplace analogous to what digital AI has delivered for knowledge work. The comments align with an internal milestone: XPENG recently convened a mass production mobilization meeting for its robotics division attended by nearly 1,000 employees drawn from automotive, powertrain, manufacturing, testing, and general intelligence centers.

Three senior executives attended the meeting – He Xiaopeng, Vice President Gu Jie, and LC Mi, head of the robotics center – signaling that XPENG’s robotics program has entered its final development phase before production.

Timeline and Deployment Plan

He outlined a specific commercial timeline. The company expects mass production of humanoid robots by the end of 2026, with initial deployment as shopping assistants at XPENG’s offline retail stores planned for Q1 2027. The retail deployment represents a deliberate entry point – a structured, relatively controlled environment that allows the robots to interact with customers in a visible, commercially meaningful setting while generating operational data before broader industrial or service deployment.

He said that starting in 2027, physical AI will begin transforming workplaces at scale – offering significant operational assistance and, in some roles, replacing human workers entirely. He views the scaling speed of capable humanoid robots as potentially exceeding that of automobiles once key capability thresholds are crossed, given the software-intensive nature of the product.

Full-Stack Development as Competitive Differentiation

XPENG has pursued a vertically integrated approach to humanoid robot development that distinguishes it from most competitors. The company claims full-stack proprietary technology spanning chips, operating systems, joints, and dexterous hands – making it, according to He, the only company in China with complete in-house control over the full robotics technology stack.

The company restructured its robotics team to drive robot intelligence and motion control through AI rather than traditional software engineering – a shift that reflects the broader industry movement toward learned robot behaviors over hand-coded control systems.

The upfront investment in full-stack development is framed by XPENG as a quality and capability advantage that will compound as production scales: superior control over each layer of the system translates into tighter integration, faster iteration, and less dependence on external suppliers whose component decisions constrain overall platform performance.

Context in China’s Humanoid Race

XPENG’s timeline places it among the more aggressive Chinese humanoid manufacturers targeting 2026-2027 commercialization. GigaAI is targeting free home trials in Wuhan by the first half of 2027. Agibot shipped its 10,000th robot in March and is scaling industrial deployments. Unitree’s IPO hearing is scheduled for June 1 as the company prepares for public capital markets access.

He’s prediction of 2027 as a sector inflection point aligns with assessments from Morgan Stanley, which has framed China’s humanoid investment strategy as mirroring its EV playbook – heavy early investment building supply chain dominance ahead of the commercial wave.
