Saab Completes Sea Trials of Large Uncrewed Underwater Demonstrator

Saab and Swedish authorities have completed initial sea trials of a large uncrewed underwater demonstrator, with further autonomous capability development planned.

Saab, Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration and the Swedish Armed Forces have launched a large uncrewed underwater vehicle demonstrator after completing its first sea trials. Saab reported the milestone on October 16, less than a year after the contract was awarded.

The company says the first project phase is complete, with a subsequent stage expected to develop more advanced capabilities. Further work will address software, sensors and autonomous functions, using trial results to inform future underwater systems.

The demonstrator integrates Saab’s Autonomous Ocean Core control system and is intended to support operations alongside existing naval platforms, including submarines. The project combines autonomous control with Swedish submarine-design and sensor-integration expertise.

Saab presents the vehicle as a development and evaluation platform that will inform future acquisition decisions. The announcement does not disclose a production order, service-entry date, endurance figure or operating depth, so the sea trials should not be read as an operational fleet deployment.

Underwater robots also appear in civilian work such as the Greenland research expedition. The naval demonstrator has a different mission, but testing must similarly establish how the complete vehicle, sensors and control software perform beyond a single successful launch.
