Key Notes
- Cologne police seized a humanoid robot and two phones following an alleged incident involving a teenage girl and a suspected social media livestream.
- The robot’s teenage owner and an adult male companion are suspects, while police are investigating a sexually motivated insult.
- Investigators have not established how the robot operated during the incident or whether someone deliberately controlled its movements.
Cologne police have seized a humanoid robot after it allegedly sexually harassed a 16-year-old girl during an incident that two young men are suspected of livestreaming. Investigators are examining how the machine operated and whether someone deliberately directed its movements.
The force said on October 12 that it had also confiscated two mobile phones. The suspects are the robot’s 16-year-old owner and his 19-year-old male companion.
Alleged Incident Outside a Restaurant
According to police, the red-and-gold robot approached the teenager from behind outside a fast-food restaurant in central Cologne shortly before midnight on the night leading into October 11. It allegedly touched her buttocks and made thrusting movements against her.
Officers later found the approximately 1.2-meter-tall machine in the trunk of a Volkswagen. Police allege that the owner and his companion filmed, streamed and commented on the incident.
A police spokesperson separately told t-online that the girl had alerted officers. The outlet also reported that the police-released photograph showed the robot wearing a gold chain.
Control Method Remains Under Investigation
The police statement does not establish that an AI system independently initiated the alleged conduct. Determining how the robot worked at the time, including whether its movements were deliberately controlled, remains part of the investigation.
The stated suspected offense is a sexually motivated insult, described in German as “Beleidigung auf sexueller Grundlage.” The announcement reports an investigation, rather than a conviction, and does not identify the people involved by name.
Public Robots and Operator Accountability
The case comes as humanoids increasingly appear in public-facing social media projects, a trend RobotsBeat explored in its coverage of Poland’s robot influencer. The alleged Cologne incident raises a different question: how a machine’s actions are traced to the systems and people controlling it.
Our reporting on robot safety has examined safeguards for machines operating near people. Those industrial systems are separate from this case; they provide no evidence about the seized robot’s capabilities or configuration. For Cologne investigators, the unresolved issue remains what caused its movements during the alleged incident.
